Colombo Plan: What is it? Canada's Involvement?

The Colombo Plan is a plan for cooperative economic and social development in Asia and the Pacific. The purposes (taken from colombo-plan.org) of this plan are:

(a) To promote interest in and support for the economic and social development of Asia and the Pacific;

(b) To promote technical co-operation and assist in the sharing and transfer of technology among member countries;

(c) To keep under review relevant information on technical co-operation between the member governments, multilateral and other agencies with a view to accelerating development through co-operative effort;

(d) To facilitate transfer and sharing of the developmental experiences among member countries within the region with emphasis on the concept of South-South Co-operation;

(e) To assist the Least Developed Countries (LDC's) of the Colombo Plan region in their effort of economic development through dissemination of technical and industrial know-how by comparatively advanced countries.

Canada's Involvement: Initial Canadian involvement was cautious, with a 1951-52 contribution of only $25 million. But today, Canada is no longer a member of the Colombo Plan.

Terry Fox: Activist #4

Terry Fox ran partway across Canada in the Marathon Of Hope, raising millions of dollars for Cancer Research still to this day. He brought awareness to Cancer and it's need for a cure. He was the beginning of all the Terry Fox runs that happen all around the world. Millions of people participate in this run every year, raising money in memory of Terry and to fund Cancer Research. To some, Terry Fox has been considered the greatest Canadian.

Nellie Mcclung: Activist #3

Nellie McClung, was a Canadian feminist, politician, and social activist. She was a part of the social and moral reform movements prevalent in Western Canada in the early 1900s. She was also the grandmother of outspoken Alberta judge John McClung. Her great causes were women's suffrage and temperance. It was largely through her efforts that in 1916 Manitoba became the first province to give women the right to vote and to run for public office. Nellie is important because she had a large impact of feminists and women around the world, and influenced many other political actions.

Dalai Lama: Activist #2

The Dalai Lama is a budist exile from Tibet. He is the 14th Dalai Lama, and his name is Tenzin Gyatso. He won the Nobel Peace Prize, and he also won independence for Tibet through an international struggle for rights of freedom. He is important because he preserves Tibetan culture and education among the thousands of refugees who accompany him. To the left is a picture of his highness, the Dalai Lama.
